Sitting on the sidewalk along Paris Road next to a Columbia Transit System bus stop, Holli Carr reads to her son Quinn. Behind his bright-white sunglasses, Quinn, 5, focuses in on the watercolor illustrations of his latest adventure, “Whale” by David Lucas. Holli softly reads aloud the story of a giant whale that washes ashore in a small town. The community uses wisdom and friendship to help save the animal. She turns the page while glancing down the street. Quinn adjusts his glasses. Holli continues reading as they wait to return two bags of books to the Columbia Public Library. “We need more summer reading material,” she says. Holli and Quinn — who is home-schooled — frequently visit the library. “We usually go with what’s featured,” Holli says, 10 books filling bags beside them. “We really like the selection.” Quinn admits his favorite books are the ones with superheroes and comics. Holli smiles. Recently the Carr family has taken on a new adventure of their own — using the city bus system to travel around town. “We’re trying it out,” Holli says. “We trying to use less gas and walk to more places like the park. It’s been fun.”
